- Alternative for students who want to earn college credit but cannot come to campus to attend traditional on-campus classes.
- Convenient for students who have scheduling conflicts, are home bound, live a distance from campus, or prefer to study in a non-traditional way.
- Courses offered in a variety of formats: online, videotape, CD-ROM, or print. (Not all courses are offered in each format.)
- Students complete course work by following the steps outlined in the course syllabus. The syllabus for online courses is contained in the online course; syllabi for other course formats are available free of charge at the Sinclair Tartan Campus Store, see web site http://www.sinclair.edu/distance.
Online: internet or web-based courses. Most interactive of the Distance Learning courses: the student has the opportunity to interact online with other students and the instructor. However, this is also the most complicated format because the student must have some skill using a computer and have ready access to the Internet in order to keep up with course work. Course lectures are given online. These courses require textbooks to supplement the course content, and some online courses incorporate videotapes.
Videotape: course lecture is obtained by watching videotapes. Assigned textbook readings supplement the videotapes.
CD-ROM: similar to the online courses, the lecture portion of the course is viewed on the computer, using the CD-ROM drive. However, students do not connect with the course, the instructor or other students online.
Print-based: the simplest of distance course formats, these courses typically have just a course syllabus and a textbook. The students read the text and do other work outlined on the syllabus.
Course content for Distance Learning is the same as traditional classroom style classes, only delivered in a different way.
